An open letter to J. Karl Miller

This gallery contains 2 photos.

Finally, I have heard and read the Thomas Jefferson quoting of Cesare Beccaria’s “Essay on Crimes and Punishments…” The quote was not a statement in support of the right to bear arms, but written as part of Jefferson’s studies to become a lawyer. Jefferson was quoting important cases of the time which he complied in a series of two books titled “Commonplace Books.” Continue reading

Atheists are going to Hell! Really?

Some, not all, apocalyptic fundamentalist and evangelical Christians seem to believe that atheists are in an all out battle against them. Their only threat is that atheists will be damned to Hell. Mr. Current thinks we will be damned twice. Really? Is this the best argument? Continue reading

Making Ourselves Better News Consumers

Your responsibilities as a consumer of news and opinion are a bit different than the journalist. Journalists, in fact, have a code of ethics developed by the Society of Professional Journalists. You may not believe this and there are some news media outlets that seem to ignore the Code of Ethics completely, but most do try to adhere to the four standards. Continue reading

Whole Foods Market Celebrates Ramadan

As a nation, we celebrate world religions and ethnicities; Christmas, Yom Kippur/Rosh Hashanah, Cinco de Mayo, Chinese New Year. So why not the Islamic holy month of Ramadan?

Whole Foods is celebrating and they are receiving a lot of heat from it; mostly from the anti-Islamic and Islamophobic isolationists within our religious and ethnic diverse boarders That should come as no surprise.

From those who mistakenly believe that the United States is politically a Christian nation, wanting their god or gods (depending on how one counts) and their holy books to be the soul and sole laws of this nation.

From those most unpatriotic people wanting to rid the Constitution of its pluralism and recognition that all faiths are equal in the eyes of our democratic republic, Who claim that Muslims, all Muslims, are terrorists, including American Muslims fighting side-by-side with those of all faiths against the terrorists who happen to use Islam as their justification. Matthew 6:1-10 — Really.

Matthew 6:1-10 is talks about personal belief, virtue and altruism. It is telling the world how good we are, something we have all been guilty of. More importantly it is a story we need to take to heart. This may be especially true of the right-wing, right-winger Christians. Continue reading

Who is holding the Republicans hostage

I wrote this on Tuesday morning (7/26), so I may be a bit behind the news, that is if (and that appears to be a big if) something positive happens in the next 24 to 48 hours. I doubt that anyone is going to move from their current trenches.

I listened with great care to Mr. Obama’s and Mr. Boehner’s renditions of what is going on. I listened to them again this morning. Here is my opinion of the bottom line. Continue reading

A Response to Father Richard Partika

Fr. Richard Partika’s letter (to the duluth News Tribune) deals with; Christianity under attack, Jefferson referred to the Ten Commandments in the Declaration of Independence, and that “evidence in documents, speeches, monuments and inscriptions on government buildings are in harmony with religion, the Declaration and the Constitution.” The vast majority of students of history know otherwise. Continue reading

An Atheist Comedy? Why not.

Comedian Ricky Gervais is “God” in the new HBO series “Afterlife.” The plot is simple. An atheist dies and ends up in heaven meeting God. Not a Christian, Jewish or Muslim God; not as the Jews Christians and Muslims understand their god. This is Gervais’s version of God. Continue reading

Allen West – Behavior unbecoming a U.S. Representative

Allen West, who tends to speak of himself in the third person, was upset over Wasserman Schultz’s comment, but should understand by know that this is only politics and not to take these comments personally. But he does not and he did.

In an email sent to Wasserman Schultz, West said, “You (Wasserman Schultz) are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the U.S. House of Representative (sic).” Continue reading
